Another Wednesday another woman crush, this time on Jessy Lanza. These ladies just make it too easy. Following our hearts to Canada this week, Jessy is an experimental R&B/ electronic pop artist with endless amounts of talent.
Since emerging onto the scene in 2013 Jessy Lanza has been making smooth, consistent waves. Finding herself on ‘Best New Artist’ lists and having her debut album Pull My Hair Back shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, that was just the beginning for Jessy.
Since then she has collaborated with Caribou, toured the world and released her second album Oh No last year. This record was complete embodiment of who Jessy Lanza is as an artist. It was honest, unique and proud. Oh No also went on to be shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize as well as landing in Pitchforks top 20 pop and R&B albums of 2016.
It was the single It Means I Love You that has really helped put Jessy’s name on the map last year. Her production and songwriting on this track is unparalleled. Exercising her love for experimental beats, she is creating a sound that is identifiably her own. However it won’t be long before others catch on.
A couple of weeks ago BBC Radio 1 aired Jessy’s first residency. Again showcasing her tastemaker ear for underground sounds, her show featured experimental R&B, footwork and techno. Jessy Lanza is one emancipated woman and it is incredibly inspiring.
