Another week another #WCW, this time we are crushing on Discwoman. Discwoman is a booking agency and a platform out of Brooklyn that is kicking goals for women in the industry. Founded by Frankie Hutchinson, Emma Burgess-Olson and Christie Tran, they are a group of women who focus on showcasing female-identified talent within the DJ community.
From what started as a two-day festival in 2014, Discwoman has expanded to put on shows and festivals featuring all-female lineups in 10 different cities. These ladies have worked with over 160 female DJ’s and producers and they continue to keep making positive change with every new booking.
They are a collective who are doing more than just voicing their dissatisfaction about the lack of women being supported in the industry. They are actually taking action to fix it. They have put on events throughout North America. When putting on their festivals they use all female talent from the curators to the artists to the event producers. Not only that but they also donate funds from the festivals to charities like the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, a charity supporting leadership and activism in high school girls.
Just last week Discwoman played the first Boiler Room set for 2016. Of course sporting an all women lineup, they did something even more noteworthy by booking only women of colour to celebrate Black History Month. They bill included jersey authority UNIIQU3, SHYBOI (who was also on visuals duty), Juliana Huxtable and BEARCAT.
Discwoman are going above and beyond and are leading the way to gender equality in the electronic music scene. Their support for women is incredibly inspiring and something others can look to as a model when booking their own festivals. Watch the video below to see Discwoman discussing women in the industry and how they can be better represented.
