Adelaide-based producer Strict Face is today releasing a new single in ‘Intraheat’. The track is set to feature on his forthcoming four-track EP Urgency, out Friday, November 22 via NLV Records.
Strict Face welcomed us into this new era of music with a one-off two-tracker last month in ‘CLB / Hide the Gold’. Both tracks were self-described “cobweb-battered dubs” fresh from the Strict Face vault. Created in 2018 and 2019 respectively, the two tracks served as a smooth segue between his debut mixtape, New Racer and what’s about to come.
Urgency will take a markedly different direction to that of the mixtape, with the four tracks boasting a club-ready sheen. He took a step back from his usual way of creating for this release, and what’s resulted is something both organic and fresh.
“The tracks on Urgency stem from output I’d written in the wake of recovering from a creative block I’d suffered after releasing my New Racer mixtape last November,” he explains.
“I hadn’t written music without having a grand plan for it in quite a while – almost every release I’d done before then had a pre-meditated M.O. – so it was a nice change of pace to just write music that I could simply play out in the clubs, without worrying over how it would fit within a DJ set. Though I’m always proud of everything I put out, this one brings a different kind of accomplishment for me.”
Premiered by DJ Mag on Monday, ‘Intraheat’ was one of the first few tracks he tackled when coming out of his creative slumber. The processed flute heard throughout the track came from a previous demo he had, with that element being the only one he kept for ‘Intraheat’.
It’s fun in every sense of the word with complex dancehall-inspired percussive rhythms weaving in and out of the jittery flute to create a bonafide club weapon. There are a few surprises tucked neatly away in this one, with Strict Face hinting that “There may or may not be a cheeky tribute to Vine hidden within the track too.”
Strict Face has proven himself to be one of Australia’s most innovative talents, with releases on international labels like Local Action, Different Circles and Gobstopper.
His previous works have seen him receive praise from a variety of influential publications like FACT Magazine, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Dummy and more.
Outside of his work as a producer, he’s a razor-sharp DJ, having performed at clubs across the country, festivals such as Life X1 Festival (Ireland), St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, FOMO and more, as well as supporting artists like Cashmere Cat, Diplo, TOKiMONSTA and Machinedrum, just to name a few.
Strict Face’s Urgency EP is officially out on Friday, November 22 via NLV Records.
